“‘Within Sacred Circles’ is the third chapter of this collaborative project, which synthesises two distinctive approaches to sound as well as to the subject.
Max Kuiper strives to create multi-dimensional sound worlds that explore the medieval world. Certain parts of the compositions correspond with specific locations, atmospheres, and/or mental states from medieval times. It deconstructs the stereotypical ideas of the medieval age and unveils secrets and meanings hidden in its darkness.
The second cornerstone of the project is the Book of Ysegrim, otherwise known as Reynard the Fox. This book is the subject of Thorsten Soltau‘s long-term fascination. The story of the morally corrupt fox who betrays the other animals around him for his own advantage clearly reflects medieval societal structures, disguised as a fable. While it is undoubtedly a witty satire of the nobility and the Church, it also offers a balanced view of personal behaviour and enrichment.
This work can be thought of as a book, adventure, walk, abstract pilgrimage or mental process within the sound. The segments are categorised into pages, types of light, stages of various kinds, a poetic soundtrack of a fable, and a number of atmospheres and enigmas of locations.
‘Within Sacred Circles’ contains images that tell multilayered stories. One can think of medieval pages that combine images and texts or calligraphy”.
